"Dun in the Mire" was a section of the eastern portion of the Town of Norfolk, Virginia, shown on a mapping of the area from the 1680s. This area was a low-lying, swampy wetland that was gradually filled in and built upon. During a nor'easter or strong coastal storm, the streets in this area still flood, reminding us of its original name over 300 years ago. -- British General Benedict Arnold was stationed in what in now downtown Portsmouth, Virginia, during the latter part of the Revolutionary War. He commissioned a map of the area to see what he commanded and it included the Great Dismal Swamp in the southern region. The body of water in the swamp today is know as "Lake Drummond.," but on the Arnold map of 1781, it is labeled as "Drummond's Pond." -- "Paddy on the Turnpike is one of the first real traditional fiddle tunes I learned on the dulcimer and it is still one of my favorites.
