I am proud to be part of the large Fentress family that has been in southeastern Virginia since the 1670s. We had a period of about five months where we lost three members of our family, and it was during this time that I wrote this tune. Part of my ancestry is Scottish, and Clark is one of the smaller families accepted by the Clan McPherson. The ancestral seat of the McPherson clan is close to a mountain known as the black rock, or creag dhubh in Gaelic (pronounced craig duu), near the town of Newtonmore, Scotland.
